Quick answer

On a Samsung washer, "won't spin" and "won't drain" are usually the same problem. Samsung explains that the washer tries to drain before it spins. If the water can't get out, it never reaches the spin step.

The most common causes, in order:

  1. A clogged pump (debris) filter on front-loaders. Samsung recommends cleaning it about once a month or every 40 washes. Free to fix.
  2. A drain hose problem: kinked, pushed too far into the standpipe (more than 8 inches), sealed airtight, or the wrong height. Samsung calls incorrect drain hose installation the most common reason for drain issues.
  3. An unbalanced load (UB / Ub / UE). The washer won't spin at high speed if the load is lopsided or the machine isn't level.
  4. A failed part: drain pump, motor or motor sensor (3C/3E/bE codes), or on top-loaders, the clutch/shifter (PC/PE codes) or suspension.

What the codes mean (per Samsung US):

CodeSamsung's meaningIs it a spin/drain fault?
5C / 5EWater is not draining✅ Yes, the main drain code
UB / Ub / UE / U6Unbalanced load✅ Stops the spin
UrUnbalanced-load retry. Not a fault; the washer is rebalancingInformational
3C / 3E / E3Motor error✅ Can stop the spin
4C / 4E / nFNot filling with water❌ It's a fill code, not a drain code, but a wrong drain-hose setup can trigger it
dCDoor error on most models (unbalance on some)Can stop the cycle

Repair or replace? Clearing a filter or fixing a hose costs nothing. A drain pump is usually a cheap repair worth doing. A motor, tub bearing, or (front-load) spider arm repair on an older washer is where replacement often wins. Use the 50% rule below. Samsung's US warranty page says new Samsung washers bought on or after April 1, 2026 get 10-year parts coverage on the Digital Inverter Motor (receipt required), so check that before paying for a motor.

Find your model number on the label: on many Samsung washers it's on the back of the door or lid, or on the rear of the cabinet. Check your manual for the exact spot.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

Caution: If you just ran a hot cycle (Sanitize, Pure Cycle, etc.), Samsung says to let the water cool for about one hour before draining it. Have towels and a shallow pan ready.

  1. Read the code and check it isn't Ur. Ur just means the washer is rebalancing and will try the spin again. It's not a fault. Wait.
  2. Rebalance the load (UB / Ub / UE). Untangle and spread out the laundry, close the door, and press Start. Small loads, single heavy items (a bath mat, one towel), and tangled sheets cause most unbalance errors. Samsung says not to wash floor mats, pillows, or dog beds. Add a couple of similar items or lower the spin speed.
  3. Level the washer. Rock it diagonally. If any corner wobbles, adjust the legs (shorter legs = more stable) and tighten the locking nuts on front-loaders. If it's on a pedestal, level the pedestal first. Leave about 1 inch between the washer, the dryer, and the wall.
  4. Clean the pump filter (front-load only).
    1. Open the small panel at the bottom front.
    2. Pull out the short emergency drain hose, remove its cap, and drain the water into a pan.
    3. Twist the filter counterclockwise to remove it (some push-and-twist like a medicine cap).
    4. Clean it with a soft brush and look inside the housing at the pump impeller. Coins, hair ties, and socks often jam it.
    5. Reinstall it clockwise until it's secure and vertical, recap the hose, and close the panel.
  5. Check the drain hose. Samsung's requirements:
    • Inserted at least 6 inches but no more than 8 inches into the standpipe (deeper causes siphoning). Secure it with a zip tie.
    • Not airtight in the standpipe (that also causes siphoning).
    • Positioned 18–96 inches high (or 24–35 inches if it drains into a sink).
    • No kinks, damage, or extension kits.
    • Don't remove the screw on the back that holds the drain hose holder. Removing it can cause the washer to drain on its own and throw LC or 4C errors. If the holder is missing, Samsung says service is required.
  6. Fix the water supply if you see 4C. Open both valves fully, make sure hot goes to hot and cold to cold (a missing hot line can trigger 4C even on "cold" cycles), straighten the hoses, and clean the inlet screens if there's debris. Samsung says not to use Flood Safe hoses. Then power-cycle the washer for 1 minute.
  7. Run Calibration mode. With the drum empty, press and hold Temp. + Delay End for 3 seconds until Cb appears. (On some models, you hold the buttons and then press Power.) The tub rotates for 1–3 minutes, shows En/End/0, and shuts off. Samsung says this can "kick start" spinning, especially after you've fixed a drain issue. If your manual doesn't mention Calibration mode, your model doesn't have it.

Don't keep resetting the code. Samsung warns that a reset clears the washer's error history, which makes it harder for a technician to diagnose. If a code comes back after the checks above, request service instead.

Optional: Smart Install self-test. Samsung documents a built-in diagnostic (empty washer → set Delay End to 17 hours → hold Start until AS shows → press Start). It tests the door lock, the fill valves (fails = 4C), drain (fails = 5C), and high-speed spin (fails = 3C). Only run it if no error code is showing. It's a great way to tell a technician exactly which step failed.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer and turn off both water valves. Drain the water first. Front-load washers are heavy; tipping one or pulling it out of a closet is a two-person job.

1. Water stays in the drum (5C / 5E), and the filter and hose are clear

Likely cause: a failed or jammed drain pump.

Signs: you hear a hum but no water moves (jammed impeller or failing motor), or there's no sound at all during drain (dead pump, wiring, or board).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drain pump (with or without filter housing)Pumps water outModerate on front-loaders; moderate–hard on top-loaders (access from underneath)
Drain hose (internal or external)Carries water to the standpipeEasy–moderate
Main control boardPowers the pumpModerate–hard; diagnose first

2. It drains, but keeps showing UB / Ub / UE or won't reach full speed

Likely causes: loading habits, an unlevel machine, or worn suspension that lets the tub swing too far.

Signs: the tub bangs or knocks during spin, the tub sits off-center at rest (top-load), or the washer "walks" across the floor.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Suspension rods (top-load)Hold and damp the tubModerate
Shock absorbers / dampers (front-load)Damp tub movementModerate
Leveling legsKeep the cabinet stableEasy
Vibration (MEMS) sensorDetects unbalance (8E/BE codes on some models)Moderate

3. Drum won't turn at all, or 3C / 3E / bE motor codes

Likely causes: a motor fault, a motor speed (hall) sensor fault, a wiring problem, or the control board. On top-loaders, a clutch/shifter fault (PC/PE codes) can stop the spin too.

Signs: the washer fills and drains but the drum doesn't turn; the drum turns by hand but not under power; a burning smell (stop using it and unplug it).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Hall (motor speed) sensorTells the board how fast the drum turnsModerate
Drive motor / stator / rotorTurns the drumModerate–hard
Clutch / shifter assembly (top-load)Switches between agitate and spinHard
Main control board / inverter boardDrives the motorModerate–hard; diagnose first

Check the warranty before you pay for a motor. Samsung's US warranty page lists 10-year coverage on the Digital Inverter Motor for washers, and its footnote limits this to washers purchased on or after April 1, 2026, with a receipt. Older washers may have different motor terms; check your model's warranty card. Labor may not be included.

4. It won't start the spin because the door or lid won't lock (dC / dE / LO)

Likely causes: laundry caught in the door, a broken latch, or a failed door lock / lid lock assembly. The washer won't spin unless it confirms the door is locked.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Door lock (front-load) / lid lock (top-load)Locks and confirms the door is shutEasy–moderate
Door strike / hingeLines the door up with the lockEasy

5. Loud grinding or roaring during spin, then it stops spinning (front-load)

Likely causes: worn tub bearings or a corroded/cracked spider arm (the metal bracket on the back of the drum). These are big, labor-heavy repairs and often the point where replacing wins on a washer that's more than about halfway through its life. Get a written quote.

6. 4C (not filling) shows up when you're having drain trouble

Samsung lists 4C as a fill error. But a drain hose pushed too deep or sealed airtight can siphon water out as fast as it comes in, so the washer never reaches its fill level. Fix the hose (checks #5 and #6 above) before blaming the inlet valve.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the repair quote? → R
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, installed? → N
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use 11 years if you don't know)

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 4-year-old Samsung front-loader shows 5C with a clean filter. Drain pump quote R = $250, new washer N = $1,000.
250 ÷ 1,000 = 25%; life used 4 ÷ 11 = 36% → Repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): An 8-year-old front-loader roars on spin; bearing/spider quote R = $700, N = $1,000.
700 ÷ 1,000 = 70%; life used 8 ÷ 11 = 73% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: repeated unbalance errors after new suspension, drum/bearing noise, rust on the drum support, or a second major failure within a year.
Tips toward repairing: the fix is a pump, lock, sensor, or hose, or the motor is still under Samsung's motor warranty.

FAQ

What does 5C mean on a Samsung washer?
Water isn't draining. Clean the pump filter (front-load), check the drain hose (6–8 inches into the standpipe, not airtight, 18–96 inches high, no kinks), then run a cycle. If 5C returns, the drain pump is the usual suspect.

What does UB mean on a Samsung washer?
Unbalanced load. Untangle and redistribute the laundry, close the door, and press Start. If it keeps happening with normal loads, level the washer and check the suspension.

What does 4C mean on a Samsung washer?
Samsung lists 4C as a water not filling error, not a drain error. Open both valves fully, connect hot to hot and cold to cold, straighten the hoses, clean the inlet screens, and make sure the drain hose isn't too deep in the standpipe.

How do I reset my Samsung washer?
Unplug it or switch off the breaker for 1 minute (Samsung suggests 2–3 minutes for some codes), then restart. But fix the cause first. Resetting clears the error history a technician would use.

How do I drain a Samsung washer that won't drain?
On front-loaders, open the lower front panel, pull out the emergency drain hose, and drain into a shallow pan before removing the filter. Let hot water cool for about an hour first. Top-loaders have no user filter; you may need to bail the tub and call for service.

Why won't my Samsung top-load washer spin?
Check the lid lock, rebalance the load, level the machine, and check the drain hose. If it fills and drains but won't spin, a lid lock, clutch/shifter, or motor fault is likely.

Is it worth fixing a Samsung washer that won't spin?
Usually yes for a pump, lock, sensor, or hose. For bearings, a spider arm, or an out-of-warranty motor on an older washer, run the numbers in the calculator above.
