Quick answer

The most common reasons a Samsung ice maker stops working:

  1. A setting or simple blockage. The ice maker is switched off (the Ice Off icon is lit), the freezer is warmer than 0 °F, the bucket isn't fully seated, or something besides ice (like the scoop) is in the bucket so the sensor thinks it's full. Free to fix.
  2. Not enough water. A clogged or expired water filter, a partly closed supply valve, a kinked line, or household pressure under 20 psi. Samsung's own test: the dispenser should fill 3/4 cup (6 oz) in under 10 seconds.
  3. Frost or a block of ice in the ice room or bucket. This is the classic Samsung French-door complaint. Warm, moist air gets into the ice compartment (bad bucket seal, door misalignment, or a failed defrost/fan part), frost builds, and the ice maker jams. Samsung says not to defrost the ice maker yourself or force a frozen bucket; request service.

Repair or replace? An ice maker fault almost never justifies replacing an otherwise healthy fridge. Even a full ice maker assembly plus labor is usually a small share of a new French-door refrigerator. Replacement only starts to make sense when the ice problem is one of several failures on an older fridge, or when the fridge also isn't cooling. Use the 50% rule calculator below.

First: which kind of Samsung ice maker do you have?

Where the ice maker sits changes both the likely fault and the fix. Find your model number on the label inside the fridge compartment (on a side wall above the top shelf on many models), then check your manual.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

These come straight from Samsung's own US troubleshooting guide and fix a lot of "broken ice maker" calls for free.

  1. Make sure the ice maker is on. Most Samsung models have an Ice Off icon that lights up when the ice maker is off. You want it not lit. (Top-freezer models use an Ice On icon, which should be lit. Family Hub models toggle this in the Fridge Manager app; Wi-Fi models can also use SmartThings. On dual-ice models, keep tapping until neither Ice Off icon is lit.)
  2. Check the freezer temperature. The freezer must be at 0 °F or colder to make ice, even when the ice maker is in the fridge door. If yours is set higher, set it to 0 °F or lower, turn on Power Freeze, and recheck in 3 hours. If the freezer can't reach its set temperature, you have a cooling problem, not an ice maker problem. See our Samsung refrigerator not cooling guide.
  3. Seat the bucket and clear it out. The bucket must click fully into place. Remove the scoop or any food from the bucket: anything other than ice can make the ice maker think the bucket is full. On dual-ice models, check the bucket faces the right way (scoop holder at the front of the freezer).
  4. Reset the ice maker with the Test button. Remove the bucket, find the Test button on the ice maker (usually on the right side), and press and hold until it chimes (up to about 10 seconds). The test runs about 6 minutes on fridge-compartment ice makers or about 30 seconds on freezer ice makers. At the end, the water valve should hum and fill the tray.
    • No chime and no movement? Unplug the fridge or switch off its breaker for 2 minutes, then try again.
    • Multiple chimes at the end, or still no reaction after the power cycle, means Samsung recommends service.
    • Don't press Test repeatedly once the tray has water or ice in it. It can overflow and jam.
  5. Check water pressure and the filter. Dispense water into a measuring cup for 10 seconds. You should get at least 3/4 cup. If not, remove the filter and test again. If it passes without the filter, replace the filter (Samsung says to use Samsung-brand filters; they're rated for about 300 gallons, roughly 6 months). If it still fails, make sure the household supply valve is fully open and the line isn't kinked. Reverse-osmosis systems often drop pressure too low.
  6. Level the fridge and keep doors shut. If the fridge isn't level, water won't fill the tray evenly. Every door opening pauses ice production.
  7. Give it time. After any fix, Samsung says to expect ice within 3 hours, and up to 24 hours for normal amounts (about 2 trays every 3 hours). A fridge-compartment ice maker makes a tray every 45–65 minutes; a freezer ice maker about every 85 minutes.

If none of this works, use the symptom guide below.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the fridge and shut off the water supply. Don't use a hair dryer, heat gun, or sharp tools on a frozen ice maker. Samsung specifically warns against forcing a stuck bucket or using heat to defrost it. Sealed-system work (refrigerant, compressor) needs an EPA Section 608-certified technician.

1. The ice bucket is frozen solid, or there's a sheet or block of ice in the ice room (French door)

What's happening: warm, humid air from the fridge compartment is leaking into the ice room. It freezes as frost, then as solid ice around the ice maker, bucket, and chute. Over time the ice maker can't eject cubes and the auger can't turn.

Common root causes:

What Samsung says: If the bucket can't be removed easily, it's likely frozen. Don't force it or use a hair dryer; request service. If the ice maker is frozen over with a sheet of ice, request service. For Family Hub and other SmartThings-connected fridges, Samsung says it has released a firmware update that can help prevent and possibly resolve this issue: connect the fridge to SmartThings and it updates itself.

Things you can safely check:

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Ice bucket / bucket gasketSeals the ice room from the warm fridge airEasy
Ice maker assemblyFills, freezes, and ejects ice; has a built-in heater/sensorModerate (DIY on many models, but the ice room must be fully thawed and dried first)
Ice room fan motorPushes cold air into the ice roomModerate–hard (behind panels in the door or liner)
Auger motorTurns the auger to push ice to the dispenserModerate
Door hinge / alignment partsKeeps the left door sealing against the cabinetEasy–moderate

Why "just defrost it" usually fails: In a Samsung technical bulletin for this issue (published by a third party), technicians are told to remove the ice maker, steam every trace of ice and frost out of the ice room including the drain area, dry everything, and then reseal the ice room. The bulletin warns that any ice left behind can bring the problem back, and says never to use a heat gun or hair dryer. A quick DIY thaw often skips these steps, so the ice comes back. If yours keeps re-freezing, that's a strong sign to book a pro. 📞 Partner pro: (XXX) XXX-XXXX

2. No ice at all, and the Test cycle doesn't fill the tray with water

Likely causes: water supply, not the ice maker.

Signs: the ice maker moves during the Test cycle, but no water comes in at the end; the water dispenser is slow or dead.

Part / itemWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Water filterClogged filters choke flowEasy
Household supply valve / supply lineMust be fully open and unkinked; at least 20 psiEasy (plumber if pressure is low)
Water inlet valveOpens to send water to the ice maker and dispenserModerate
Fill tubeCan freeze shut and block water to the trayModerate

RS27T / RS22T side-by-side owners: these models have two water lines. If they were cross-connected at installation, ice and water won't work correctly. If yours never worked since install, check this first.

3. The ice maker doesn't move or chime when you press Test

Likely causes: a failed ice maker assembly (motor or control), a wiring/connector problem in the door hinge, or a control board issue.

What to do: power-cycle the fridge for 2 minutes and try once more. If there's still no reaction and you're sure you're pressing Test correctly, Samsung's guidance is to request service. If an error code appears after the power cycle, check Samsung's refrigerator error code guide. The fridge may need service without further troubleshooting.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Ice maker assemblyIncludes the motor, sensor, and heaterModerate
Main control board (PCB)Powers and controls the ice makerModerate–hard; diagnose first

4. Ice is small, hollow, cloudy, clumped, or slushy

5. Ice is in the bucket but won't come out of the dispenser

This is a dispenser problem, not an ice maker problem: clumped ice, a stuck auger, a frozen chute, or a dispenser flap/motor fault. Samsung has a separate guide for it (see sources).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Auger motorTurns the augerModerate
Dispenser door / flap motor (solenoid)Opens the chuteModerate

6. The fridge or freezer is also warm

Stop troubleshooting the ice maker. The ice maker can't work if the freezer isn't at 0 °F. Go to the Samsung refrigerator not cooling guide.

Warranty check first: Samsung's US home appliance warranty page says most appliances include a 1-year parts-and-labor warranty, and refrigerators add 5-year sealed-system coverage and 10-year parts coverage on the digital inverter compressor. The ice maker is normally covered only under the standard warranty. Samsung's page also advertises a promotional free 2-year extended warranty on eligible appliances bought from participating retailers between July 9 and December 31, 2026 (claim form required). Confirm your exact terms on the Samsung warranty page before paying for a repair.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the repair quote? → R
2. What does a comparable new fridge cost, installed? → N
3. How old is your fridge, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use 12 years if you don't know)

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Consider energy savings of a new model
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Worked example (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old Samsung French-door fridge has a frozen ice room. Quote R = $400 (thaw, reseal, and new ice maker), new fridge N = $2,400.
Cost ratio = 400 ÷ 2,400 = 17%. Life used = 5 ÷ 12 = 42%. → Repair.

When an ice problem tips toward replacing: the fridge is past ~10 years and also has a cooling, compressor, or sealed-system fault; the ice room has been professionally serviced more than once and still re-freezes; or parts for your model are discontinued.

The free alternative: if the rest of the fridge works and you don't want to keep paying for ice-room repairs, you can switch the ice maker off (Ice Off) and use trays or a countertop ice maker. That's a legitimate choice, not a failure.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

If several appliances in your home are aging, a home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: some plans limit ice maker coverage, and a fridge that's already broken is usually not covered.

FAQ

How do I reset my Samsung ice maker?
Remove the ice bucket, then press and hold the Test button on the ice maker until it chimes (up to about 10 seconds). If it doesn't respond, unplug the fridge or turn off its breaker for 2 minutes and try again. Don't press Test repeatedly once the tray has water or ice in it.

Why is my Samsung ice maker not making ice but the water works?
Check that Ice Off isn't lit, the freezer is at 0 °F or colder, the bucket is seated and holds only ice, and nothing is frozen in the ice room. If the dispenser fills 3/4 cup in under 10 seconds, water pressure is fine, so the ice maker, its fill tube, or the inlet valve's ice-maker side is the next suspect.

Why does my Samsung ice maker keep freezing up?
Usually warm, moist air is leaking into the ice room through a bad bucket seal or a misaligned door, or a fan/defrost function isn't working. A partial thaw often lets it re-freeze. Samsung recommends service rather than DIY defrosting; Wi-Fi models may get a firmware fix through SmartThings.

Can I defrost my Samsung ice maker with a hair dryer?
No. Samsung says not to use a hair dryer or force a stuck bucket. It can damage the ice maker and the plastic liner.

How long does it take a Samsung ice maker to make ice after a reset?
Ice should start within about 3 hours. Full production can take up to 24 hours.

Is it worth fixing a Samsung ice maker?
Almost always, if the rest of the fridge cools properly. Even a full ice maker replacement is a small fraction of a new refrigerator. Use the calculator above.

Is cloudy ice normal?
Yes. Samsung says white, cloudy cubes are normal from its rapid-freeze ice makers.
