LG Washer UE Error / Won't Spin: Fixes, Repair Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
UE means your LG washer couldn't balance the load, so it won't spin at full speed. LG also shows it as Ub on some models. LG says this code "can be easily resolved without the need of a technician" in most cases.
Lowercase uE vs uppercase UE:
- uE (lowercase) = the washer is trying to rebalance. LG says it adds water, tumbles or agitates to separate the clothes, drains, and tries to spin again, up to 3 times. No action needed yet.
- UE (uppercase) = it gave up after 3 tries. The cycle pauses until you redistribute the load by hand.
The causes LG lists:
- The load itself. Small loads, a single heavy item (a rug, a pillow, a bath mat), mixed heavy and light items, or a sheet or comforter tangled into a ball.
- The washer isn't level or rocks on its feet.
- The cycle. LG says low-water cycles let clothes clump and tangle.
- Shipping bolts still in (new front-load installs). LG says this causes severe vibration and can permanently damage the washer.
The one test that decides if you need a repair: run Rinse & Spin with the drum completely empty (about 20 minutes). LG says that if UE/uE/Ub appears with nothing in the drum, "the unit is not working properly; it requires a repair service." If it doesn't, the washer is fine and the fix is leveling, loading, or the cycle.
Repair or replace? A failed shock absorber, damper, or suspension rod is usually worth fixing. A broken spider arm or worn tub bearings on an older washer often isn't. See the calculator below.

Washer walking across the floor or banging hard? Stop the cycle. A washer that bangs into a wall or pulls on its water hoses can cause a leak. Pause it, let the drum stop, and work through the steps below.
Which LG washer do you have?
Your model number is on a label, usually on the back of the washer, on the door frame (front-load), or under the lid (top-load). The fix steps differ a bit by type.
| Type | How to recognize it | Shipping bolts? | What usually causes a repeat UE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front-load (model numbers often start WM) | Door on the front | Yes, on new installs (rear of the washer) | Load, leveling, bolts left in; then shock absorbers / dampers, springs, bearings, or the spider |
| Top-load (often WT) | Lid on top | No (front-load style bolts don't apply) | Load, leveling, low-water cycle; then suspension rods, balance ring, or the drive/tub assembly |
| Washer-dryer combo / WashTower (e.g. WM combos, WKEX/WKGX) | All-in-one or tall stacked unit | Check your manual | Same as front-load; harder access, so consider a pro |
| SideKick pedestal washer | Small washer in a drawer under a front-load | Check your manual | LG says mixed heavy/light or too-small loads trigger UE on SideKick |
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
Do these in order. LG says leveling, load type and distribution, and the cycle are the "three important factors" behind UE.
- Pause and redistribute. Pause the washer, wait for the door or lid to unlock, and spread the clothes evenly around the drum. Untangle sheets and anything that has balled up. Close it and press Start/Pause. LG says it can take a few moments before the washer starts spinning again.
- Fix the load size. LG says washers perform best when the drum is about 2/3 full. For a small load, add one or two similar items (a couple of towels) so the weight spreads out. For a load that's too big, take some out.
- Don't wash one heavy thing alone. LG says single bulky items like pillows and rugs concentrate weight in one spot. Add a few items to balance them, or use the Bulky/Large or Duvet cycle. LG's front-load guide also says to remove pillow stuffing and wash just the cover, and not to machine-wash items like bath mats, rubber mats, or electric blankets.
- Separate heavy and light fabrics. LG's example: jeans on one side and T-shirts on the other will spin out of balance.
- Check the laundry nets. LG says to fill a laundry net only 2/3 full and to wash two or three nets with other clothes, not a single net by itself.
- Rock the washer. Put your hands on opposite corners and push. If it wobbles, it's not level (full steps below).
- New washer? Check for shipping bolts (front-load). See the section below.
- Run the empty Rinse & Spin test. This is LG's deciding test (next section).
LG's deciding test: empty Rinse & Spin (about 20 minutes)
- Empty the drum completely.
- Turn the washer on.
- Select Rinse & Spin.
- Press Start. LG says the cycle takes about 20 minutes.
How to read the result (per LG):
| Result | What it means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| UE / uE / Ub appears with the drum empty | The washer isn't working properly | Request a repair (or call a pro if out of warranty) |
| No error | The washer works; the problem is leveling, the load, or the cycle | Level the washer and change how you load it |
Some noise is normal. LG says it's normal for the washer to be noisier or vibrate more as the drum first speeds up and slows down at the end of the spin. "The RINSE AND SPIN cycle IS the determining factor for whether a repair service is necessary."
How to level an LG washer
LG says the drum spins at very high speeds, so the washer must be level to reduce noise and vibration.
Front-load (per LG):
- Rock the washer from the front, back, and sides. If it shakes, adjust the leg on the side it tilts toward with a wrench.
- Put a level on the top, first across the front, then front to back down the middle. The bubble should sit in the center.
- Keep the legs as close to the floor as practical and make sure all four are firmly on the floor.
Top-load (per LG):
- Open the lid and look at the plastic guard around the drum. If more of it shows on one side, the tub is leaning; raise the side the tub leans toward.
- Loosen the lock nuts on the leveling feet. Turn the bolts clockwise to raise that corner, counterclockwise to lower it, until the bubble is centered front to back and side to side.
- LG notes: only extend the legs as far as necessary; legs extended too far can cause vibration.
- Rock the washer corner to corner, then tighten all the lock nuts.
- Test it: put about 6 pounds of laundry in, run Rinse & Spin, and watch for rocking during the spin.
Slippery floor? LG suggests non-skid pads if the floor lets the washer slide during unbalanced loads. LG's installation guidance also says the floor must be solid, the slope under the washer should be no more than 1 inch side to side or front to back, and carpet or soft tile isn't recommended.
New front-load washer? Check the shipping bolts
LG front-load washers ship with bolts in the back that lock the tub. If they weren't removed, LG says the washer will make severe vibration and noise, which can lead to permanent damage.
Quick check (per LG): open the door and move the tub forward and backward. If it moves, the bolts are out. If it doesn't move, they're still in.
To remove them: use the wrench that came with the washer, turn the bolts counterclockwise, wiggle them out, and plug the holes with the caps from the accessory pack. Save the bolts for moving the washer later. LG says front-loads also ship with a foam tub support under the washer; make sure it came off with the base. If you can't remove the bolts, LG says service is required.
Top-load: LG's front-load shipping-bolt steps don't apply. Check your manual for any packing material.
Pick a better cycle (top-load especially)
LG says some cycles use less water in the wash and rinse, so clothes clump and tangle, which causes UE. LG's suggestions:
- Add the Fabric Softener option on Cotton/Normal or Heavy Duty. LG says this changes the jet-spray rinse to a Deep Rinse, and the extra water spreads the load out.
- Use Perm Press/Casual, which LG says uses more water and a deep tub rinse.
- Reduce the spin speed for small loads, or select low or no spin.
- For blankets, LG's front-load guide suggests the Duvet cycle with medium spin; for padded and down jackets, the Sportswear cycle with medium spin.
UE at the very end of the cycle? LG's error-code list says a UE at the end of the cycle means the clothes are too wet (the washer couldn't spin them out). Rearrange the load, close the door, and press Start/Pause.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer and turn off both water taps. Front-load suspension and tub parts are heavy and under spring tension; some jobs require removing the drum. If you're not sure, call a pro.
If the empty Rinse & Spin test still shows UE, or the washer bangs even with a balanced, level load, one of these is the likely cause. LG's pages stop at "request a repair"; the parts below are what a technician typically checks.
1. Front-load: loud banging on spin, drum drops or bounces too easily
Likely causes: worn shock absorbers / dampers, a weak or broken tub spring, or loose counterweight bolts.
Signs: push down on the top of the drum through the door and let go. A healthy drum moves a little and settles. A drum that keeps bouncing, sits low, or clunks points to the suspension.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Shock absorbers / dampers | Absorb drum movement during spin | Moderate |
| Tub suspension springs | Hold the tub up from the top | Moderate |
| Counterweight bolts | Keep the concrete balance weights tight | Easy–moderate |

2. Top-load: tub hits the cabinet, leans to one side, UE on most loads
Likely causes: worn suspension rods (the four rods that hang the tub from the top corners), a damaged balance ring, or a tub that's no longer centered.
Signs: with the washer off, the tub sits off-center and leveling doesn't fix it; the tub swings a lot when pushed; banging on spin even with a normal load.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Suspension rod kit (usually sold as a set of 4) | Hangs and damps the tub | Moderate |
| Balance ring | Liquid-filled ring that steadies the spin | Moderate–hard |
- Check LG top-load suspension rod kit price at PartSelect Impact subID: lg-washer-ue_suspension-rods
- Check LG top-load suspension rod kit price at RepairClinic CJ SID: lg-washer-ue_suspension-rods
3. Grinding or roaring on spin, plus UE
Likely causes: worn tub bearings and seal (front-load), often after a slow leak through the seal. On front-loads, a cracked spider arm (the three-armed bracket on the back of the drum) can let the drum wobble and trigger UE.
Signs: a loud roar that gets louder as spin speed increases; the drum wobbles or moves up and down when you lift its edge; rust streaks or a gritty feel around the back of the tub.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Tub bearing + seal kit | Supports the drum shaft | Hard (usually means a full teardown) |
| Spider arm / drum assembly | Connects the drum to the shaft | Hard; often sold with the drum |

Bearing or spider damage is where the economics usually flip. These repairs take hours of labor and sometimes a new drum or tub. On an older washer, a new one often makes more sense. Get a quote before you approve the work.

4. Drum won't spin at all, or spins slowly, with no banging
Likely causes: the washer didn't drain first (see our LG washer OE error guide), a motor or rotor position sensor problem, or a control board fault. LG's code list treats some of these separately: for example, LE (motor overloaded or locked; let it rest 30 minutes) and CE (the drum didn't reach 20 RPM within 3 minutes or 6 attempts; LG says this needs a professional).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Rotor position (hall) sensor | Tells the board the drum position and speed | Moderate |
| Direct Drive Motor (stator / rotor) | Spins the drum | Moderate–hard; check LG's 10-year motor parts coverage |
| Main control board | Runs the cycle | Moderate–hard; diagnose first |

5. UE only with certain loads
Not a part. That's a load or cycle issue. Use the loading and cycle tips above, especially for bedding, rugs, and small loads.

What LG's warranty covers on a washer
LG's 2026 US washer limited warranty (the version for many current models):
| Period (from purchase or delivery) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Parts and labor on internal/functional parts | LG |
| Years 1–3 | Stainless steel tub (part only) | You |
| Years 1–10 | Direct Drive Motor (stator and rotor) (part only) | You |
What this means for a UE problem: shock absorbers, springs, suspension rods, bearings, sensors, and the control board are covered only in year 1. The Direct Drive Motor has 10-year parts coverage, so if a tech finds the motor itself has failed, ask about it, but you'll pay labor after year 1.
Not covered: problems caused by installation, including shipping bolts left in, an unlevel washer, or a weak floor. LG's own UE guidance says a leveling or load problem "does NOT require a repair service." Keep your proof of purchase; LG requires it for warranty service. Some LG models (for example, one 2026 combo, WM9998HBA) list 2 years of parts and labor; check your model.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the repair quote? → R (subtract anything LG's warranty covers)
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, installed? → N
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use [PLACEHOLDER: washer lifespan, e.g. 10–14 years — cite source] if you don't know)
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Consider efficiency of a new model |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 1-month-old LG front-load bangs and shows UE on every spin. The drum doesn't move when pushed. Shipping bolts removed R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old LG front-load shows UE even on the empty Rinse & Spin test; the drum bounces when pushed. Shock absorbers by a pro R = $260; N = $1,000.
260 ÷ 1,000 = 26%; life used 5 ÷ 12 = 42% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old LG front-load roars on spin and shows UE; the tech finds worn bearings and a cracked spider. R = $750; N = $950.
750 ÷ 950 = 79%; life used 10 ÷ 12 = 83% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: bearings or spider arm on a washer past mid-life, a leak at the tub seal, or a second major repair within a year or two.
Tips toward repairing: it's shocks, springs, rods, or a sensor; the washer is in LG's first-year warranty; or the motor part is covered by LG's 10-year Direct Drive coverage.

Questions to ask any technician:
- Did the empty Rinse & Spin test show UE?
- Which suspension part failed, and how did you test it?
- Are the bearings and spider arm OK? (If not, what's the full cost?)
- Is any of this covered by LG's 10-year Direct Drive Motor parts coverage?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude problems from installation or leveling, and a washer that's already broken is usually not covered. Most UE problems cost nothing to fix.

FAQ
What does UE mean on an LG washer?
LG says UE (or Ub) means the washer couldn't balance the load. A lowercase uE means it's still trying (up to 3 times). An uppercase UE means it gave up and the cycle is paused until you redistribute the clothes.
How do I fix the UE error on my LG washer?
Pause, spread the clothes evenly, untangle bedding, and restart. Keep loads about 2/3 full, add a couple of towels to small loads, and make sure the washer is level. If UE keeps happening, run Rinse & Spin with an empty drum.
Why does my LG washer show UE with only a few items?
Small loads can't spread out evenly. LG says to add a few similar items or reduce the spin speed.
Does UE mean my LG washer is broken?
Usually not. LG says UE can typically be resolved without a technician. If it appears during an empty Rinse & Spin cycle, though, LG says the washer needs a repair.
My new LG washer shakes violently. What's wrong?
On a new front-load, the shipping bolts may still be in. Open the door and move the tub; if it doesn't move, remove the bolts from the back and fit the hole caps. LG warns that leaving them in can permanently damage the washer.
Can I wash a comforter in my LG washer without getting UE?
Use the Bulky/Large or Duvet cycle and medium spin, and wash it by itself or with a few similar items so the weight spreads evenly.
How do I reset an LG washer?
Turn it off, unplug it for about 10 seconds, plug it back in, and restart. For UE, a reset won't help unless you also redistribute the load.
Is it worth fixing an LG washer with bad bearings?
It depends on age and price. Bearing jobs are labor-heavy. On a washer past the middle of its life, replacing often makes more sense. Use the calculator above.

- Affiliate links: Some part links go to retailers such as PartSelect and RepairClinic. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
- Call line: Phone numbers labeled "partner pro" are operated by a third-party lead service that routes your call to an independent repair provider in your area. We may be paid for calls. We don't employ the technicians, and we don't guarantee their work, pricing, or availability. Confirm licensing, insurance, and quotes directly with the provider.
- Prices are estimates and change often. Always get a written quote.
- Safety: Unplug the washer and turn off the water before working on it. Washer drums and suspension parts are heavy. If you're unsure, call a qualified professional.
